Every year, on April the 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated, marking the first environmental milestone in defense of the planet. Since its inception, the main objective of this celebration is to raise awareness about the importance of caring for nature and preserving biodiversity.

But how did this date come about, and who was responsible for creating it? In this post, we will explore the origins of this day and how it became a global initiative with a focus on environmental protection and conservation.

Why is Earth Day celebrated?

This commemoration, also known as International Mother Earth Day, is a date that dedicates special attention to environmental care, sustainability, and the conservation of our planet. With this purpose in mind, around one billion people from over 190 different countries come together each year to raise awareness and reflect on environmental issues and how human actions can impact our home, the Earth.

In 2023, the 53rd anniversary of this sustainable initiative is being celebrated, promoting global awareness and activism in the fight for the preservation of the planet and its natural resources. Despite the popularity of this celebration, many people still question its origins. Therefore, in the following lines, we will provide relevant information to dispel any doubts about it.

Origin of Earth Day

It is necessary to go back to the 1970s to recall the moment when this proposal emerged. Although there had been social concern about the state of the environment in previous years, it was in 1970 when U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson took the initiative to establish a specific date to raise awareness in society about the environmental issues affecting the world at that time. These issues included air and water pollution, overpopulation, and more. His purpose was to honor the planet and, more importantly, emphasize the need to protect it.

The first Earth Day took place on April 22nd, 1970, and was a resounding success. The goal of this massive demonstration was to urge the U.S. government to establish an agency dedicated to environmental protection and the preservation of natural resources. Throughout the American territory, millions of people participated in this cause, with significant mobilization from students and social groups.

These demonstrations left an indelible mark on U.S. politics, and by the end of 1970, the sought-after goal was achieved. The United States Environmental Protection Agency was established, followed by the enactment of a series of relevant laws aimed at achieving this objective.

Since then, several environmental initiatives have been developed following the success of the first Earth Day, allowing for greater dissemination of its purpose worldwide. In 1990, around 200 million people from over 141 countries came together to join forces and promote the importance of recycling worldwide. As a result, la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Medioambiente y Desarrollo, known as the 1992 "Earth Summit" in Brazil, topics related to the environment, health, waste, and the planet's development, as well as the issue of climate change, were addressed. All of this led to the formation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. Additionally, it gave rise to the creation of the Commission on Sustainable Development.

Actions to care for our planet.

Currently, there are several actions that we can take in our daily lives to care for our planet and contribute to its preservation. These include:

  • Reducing energy consumption: To minimize electricity consumption at home, we can opt for energy-efficient light bulbs, disconnect electronic devices when not in use, and turn off lights when not needed.
  • Promoting sustainable mobility: Walking, cycling, or using public transportation instead of driving our own vehicles can help minimize CO2 emissions.
  • Recycling and reducing waste: It is important to properly sort waste and deposit it in the appropriate containers. Opt for reusable containers and recycle materials such as paper, glass, plastic, and metal to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or pollutes the environment.
  • Conserving water: Reduce shower time and opt for devices in faucets and toilets that allow for water consumption reduction.
  • Planting trees: It is an effective way to combat climate change and improve air quality.
  • Supporting biodiversity conservation: Participate in initiatives to protect local fauna and flora and avoid purchasing products derived from endangered species.

These are just some measures we can implement in our lives to take care of the planet. Every small effort counts, and we can all contribute to a better and more sustainable future.

At Naeco, we strongly embrace this philosophy. That's why we have developed the Naeco Rewind program to raise awareness among our customers about the importance of sustainability. With this initiative, we repurchase various products, such as plastic pallets, boxes, and containers, to recycle them and turn them into new raw materials.

In this way, we promote the Circular Economy and contribute to the creation of a "Zero Waste" chain. By recycling these products, the number of waste is reduced, and our customers also recover part of their initial investment.
